ABOUT
HELLO!
Welcome, my fellow nature enthusiasts! Happy to have you all here.
Since you all are here already I bet you would want to know who we are actually. Isn’t that what the about page is about, duh? So stupid of me to ask. Let’s get to the introduction first.
I am Debjani Dey, just another being on this planet of 8 billion of a species we like calling humans. I am also someone who likes expressing herself through writing and art.
Ever since a very young age I had a keen interest in all forms of life around me – observing the ant as it collected crumbs of food from the kitchen only to disappear through a crack in the plaster at the corner of the wall, or looking through my window eyes wide with curiosity as the tailor bird sewed a tiny cozy nest out of leaves on the fig tree in our backyard or simply be amazed at how the dragonfly so closely resembled an aeroplane and could steer itself so swiftly in any direction it desired. It was only in college that I decided to give this interest a recognition when I took up Zoology as my honours subject. I went on to do my M.Sc. in the subject with a specialization in Ecology, Evolution and Animal Behaviour. I also had the chance to work as a research intern at the prestigious Zoological Survey of India. I had a paper published during my work as a researcher which you may find here.
While in the academic circle I couldn’t ignore the vast communication gap that still exist between the science academia and the general public despite efforts from both ends. In the process of finding the reason behind this existing void I realised that the problem boils down to just one – language. Just like a language barrier between two geographical regions a language barrier exists between the scientific research community and the general public. The language used amongst researchers are so full of the complex terminology and technical details, something very much characteristic of the research process itself, that most researchers find it difficult to get rid of the complexity when explaining their work to the general audience. Most feel if they leave out the technical details they will not be able to convey the information completely while also finding it hard to come to terms with a simpler language which is easier for the general audience to understand.
I decided to lend a hand in bridging this gap thus joining many other amazing science communicators who were already here before me consistently trying to transform complex scientific research topics into interesting stories readers can enjoy. That was how The Nature Enthusiast came into existence.
The Nature Enthusiast promises to serve as a conjunction where scientific, literary, artistic, sensitive, curious, creative and beautiful minds meet. This online platform hopes to bring new findings and established facts in the sphere of natural sciences packaged as interesting stories for curious readers both old and young to enjoy.
Facts presented in our articles come from peer-reviewed journals and other verified sources thoroughly researched before being presented to our readers. Our stories often make an attempt to observe common phenomenon from a different angle which we believe stirs the inquisitive side in our readers minds.
The Nature Enthusiast also provides its readers with tips for making informed choices helping them move towards a sustainable living.
Apart from good writing The Nature Enthusiast also presents interesting artworks in its stories. All the artworks presented on the website are hand painted on acid-free paper with non-toxic colours. The Nature Enthusiast believes that art is one of the purest forms of expression and helps one build a strong connection between oneself and nature. Surrounding oneself with good artworks elevates the mind to a higher level of consciousness which will further help us feel the woes our planet Earth and all life forms in it are suffering. More the mind feels, compassion grows with it and this transformation is the beginning that sets the ground for a sustainable lifestyle. Once this mentality sets in we realise how little we actually need. If only all of us did our little bit towards conserving this beautiful planet our world would be so much different.
Allow The Nature Enthusiast to present the beauty of the natural world to you all through words and art. Once you witness her beauty you may want to love her and once you love her you will want to protect her.
Join The Nature Enthusiast as it embarks on its mission to bring more people under the umbrella of becoming scientifically informed, philosophically conscious, action-impact-aware compassionate residents of this beautiful planet Earth.
